Exploring, Preserving, and Telling the Story of Rural Texas

ARCTexas began in 2018 as Assisting Rural Communities – Texas, an effort to shine a light on the challenges facing small towns and rural regions across the state.

Texas is often portrayed through the lens of its major cities, Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, but the heart of Texas has always lived in its rural communities, ranchlands, farms, and small towns. These places face unique pressures that are often overlooked: water conservation challenges, land preservation issues, limited healthcare access, declining educational opportunities, and the steady migration of rural populations toward urban centers.

ARCTexas was created to bring attention to these realities and to explore practical conversations about the future of rural Texas.

Over time, the project evolved beyond articles and commentary into a broader digital storytelling initiative.

Today ARCTexas combines technology, media, and storytelling to document and explore Texas through multiple formats.

What ARCTexas Does

Research and Commentary

ARCTexas examines issues affecting rural communities, including:

  • Water conservation and land stewardship
  • Rural healthcare access
  • Education in small communities
  • Agricultural and ranching sustainability
  • Economic development in rural regions
  • The cultural history of Texas communities

The goal is not just to discuss problems, but to explore ideas, solutions, and historical context that help people understand how Texas continues to evolve.

Digital Exploration of Texas

To help people experience Texas more directly, ARCTexas also develops mobile applications and interactive media.

One of the key initiatives is Texas Tours, a series of Android apps designed to explore different regions of the state. Each app highlights the history, geography, and unique character of its region, encouraging people to rediscover Texas beyond the interstate highways.

Podcasts, Books, and Interactive Media

ARCTexas also produces:

  • Podcasts exploring Texas history and culture
  • Books and written works focused on the state’s past and present
  • Digital games and interactive experiences designed to make learning about Texas engaging and accessible

These projects all share a common goal: to tell the story of Texas in ways that are informative, engaging, and accessible to a modern audience.

Why ARCTexas Exists

Texas is changing rapidly. Urban growth, technological shifts, and economic pressures are reshaping communities that have existed for generations.

ARCTexas exists to help document, understand, and discuss those changes.

It is both a research initiative and a storytelling platform dedicated to preserving the knowledge, culture, and challenges of rural Texas while exploring how those communities can thrive in the future.

A Personal Project with a Broader Mission

ARCTexas began as a personal effort driven by a deep interest in Texas history, rural life, and the future of small communities.

What started as a simple website discussing rural issues has grown into a multi-format media project combining writing, technology, mobile applications, podcasts, books, and digital experiences.

At its core, ARCTexas remains guided by one simple idea:

Texas is more than its cities.
The story of Texas lives in its rural communities and those stories deserve to be told.
